Fidel's Secret Island Getaway
When visiting the Criadero de Cocodrilos in Mantanzas, you can take a short boat ride to to the island of Guamá. The island is located in Laguna del Tesero (Treasure Lake), and was a favorite vacation spot of Fidel Castro. So much so that he commissioned the building of a Taíno village.
The Taíno were an Arawak people who were the native inhabitants of Cuba and of the Caribbean in general prior to the arrival of the Europeans. They were pretty much wiped off the face of Cuba by the Spaniards years ago. What Fidel saw in this tiny island, I'm not sure. It's a nice island, but was otherwise not extraordinary in anyway that I could see.
