Faces of Burma Part 1

The markets in Myanmar always seem to be bustling with activity. Many of the markets seem to be heavily focused on food, along with the usual assortment of practical items be it clothing, kitchenwares or other household goods. The Central Market in the hill town of Pyin Oo Lwin (aka Maymyo) goes a bit beyond this with a bevy of small sewing and textile shops.

While making my way through the market, I came across this young girl who kindly allowed me to take her photo. If you're not too familiar with Burmese culture, you might be wondering what's going on with her cosmetic choices. The paste is called Thanaka, and is made from ground bark. It is seen all throughout Myanmar, and is typically applied to the face of women and girls, but occasionally to boys, and to a much much lesser extent, men.

The friendly face of a local.
