Hraunfossar

It might be summer in Iceland, but the effects of the land of fire and ice are everywhere to be seen, in stunning displays of lava fields, waterfalls, glaciers, volcanoes, you name it. This series of waterfalls flows over the Hallmundarhraun lava field before emptying into the Hvítá river.

Getting to the falls is quite easy, with parking just a very short walk away from the actual falls. With well-marked trails, it's easy to walk around and see the falls from a number of angles as well as some viewing platforms. Steps away is another waterfall, Barnafossar, so it's like a two-in-one combo.

This was my first sightseeing stop in Iceland, and so I eagerly took lots of photos from all the different angles, but this view was my favorite. One of the biggest nuisances though, was the sheer number of small black flies or whatever insect they were. They would swarm around you and just follow you around. Really annoying when you want to take a photo and you have these tiny black things getting in the shot! It wasn't just here either - I encountered them at a number of places in Iceland, so it must have been peak season for them.
