Oil Drums

Collection of oil drums gathered at Vernadsky Research Base on Galindez Island. An interesting station to visit in Antarctica, although being the only station I truly visited I guess there wasn't much competition for that title. Try the sweet vodka at the bar if you have the opportunity.

The UK originally established the base in 1947, and later moved it to its current location in 1954. The cost of disassembling the station to remove all traces of it was too great so when the British no longer had a use for it they sold it to Ukraine for a symbolic one pound. It's currently staffed by 12 Ukrainians.

Barrels of heavy-duty oil stored outside.
